Some observers see the pandemic as accelerating the move to online selling by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/industries\/retail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as much as five years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the height of the pandemic, there was also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/news\/covid-19-has-changed-online-shopping-forever-survey-shows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a marked shift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from \u201cluxury\u201d shopping to essentials such as food and healthcare products. As the world\u2019s economy moves into a recovery cycle, that balance is changing again, and people are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/about\/media-center\/press-releases\/2020\/covid_19_crisis_pushes_luxury_to_sharpest_fall_ever_but_catalyses_industrys_ability_to_transform\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasingly buying so-called luxuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as fashion and furniture across 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic has driven ecommerce\u2019s market share of retail trade to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/webflyer\/covid-19-and-e-commerce-global-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from 14% in 2019), but it is unlikely that this will decrease. Although it was existing ecommerce stores that were best placed to deal with the new demands of the pandemic, many mortar stores with no previous online presence joined the ecommerce market to survive and avoid closures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this means in real terms is that the online marketplace will continue to grow to meet the demands of an increasingly tech-savvy customer base. Offering omnichannel access to your products and services has now become the new normal and brands need to strengthen their online presence in order to compete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. However, before you panic, one important point should be noted; it is third-party cookies that are disappearing but first-party cookies will be remaining in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third-party cookies: These are codes that are placed on your computer that track online consumer behavior. They give marketers information on the sites they visit, what they show interest in, and what purchases they make. It helps marketers to build more accurate buyer personas and to target their campaigns more efficiently.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First-party cookies: These could be described as more \u201cpersonal\u201d in nature as they generate codes about visitors to your actual site. They can be used to create a better user experience and also help with remembering passwords and other personal preferences when a customer returns to your site.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a marketer who relies predominantly on third-party cookies, then it is time to rethink your tactics (if you are not already doing so).\u00a0 But if you are a marketer running your site via a CMS (content management system), then you will still be able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/affise.com\/analytics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">track analytics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via your dashboard, including referrals (something vital to affiliate programs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.
